Power of lawyer gives someone the legal right to act on your behalf. There are a number of different types of power lawyer. For instance, medical power of lawyer gives someone else the legal right to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so. You can also give someone power of lawyer to do a specific task for you- such as giving someone power of lawyer only to act as your agent to close a mortgage when you need to be out of town. Finally, you can give someone general power of lawyer to manage your assets and your affairs. When you give someone power of lawyer, it can become effective immediately, or it can become effective at a later point (this is referred to as a springing power of lawyer). You can also specify that you wish to give someone durable power of lawyer, which means that the grant of authority will be ongoing and last even if you become incapacitated.
